Kinja'd!!!

My son had a regimen of exercises he has to do this summer to prepare for the fall soccer season (he’s the goalie). So, to encourage him, my wife and I are doing the exercises with him. This morning was legs:

20 squats

30 lunges

40 calf raises

50 second wall sit

100 jumping jacks

50 second wall sit

30 leg raises

50 second wall sit

20 squats

The wall sits are a bitch, as are the leg raises. And I can’t manage 100 jumping jacks. But I’m amazed at how even non-impacting exercises like squats can get my heart rate up. Tonight, it’s arms:

20 push ups

20 triangle push ups

40 air punches

20 simultaneous arm lifts (these are surprisingly tiring)

20 push ups

20 triangle pushups

20 tricep dips

When I started, I could manage maybe 5 push ups. Now I can get more than 10 at a time. Baby steps.

And the plyometrics are a particular bitch:

20 squat jumps

20 side lunges

20 standing broad jumps

20 parallel squats

20 zig zag jumps with balanced step

20 double broad jump

20 2nd-stair jumps

20 tuck jumps

That's probably worse than having to run 50 minutes in the 90 degree heat.

I am a firm believer that 99.9% of people don’t need the gym, and could get in shape by doing squats, lunges, push ups, and sit ups. Unless you want to bulk up a lot that is.

I don’t. I’d like to tone up, and maybe shed a pound or two (I’ve gained 6 since the start of the summer by not riding my bike and drinking too much beer). I think the one thing you might benefit from by going to the gym is having somebody help make sure you’re doing the exercises right. But hey, isn’t that what YouTube is for?

Squats make me rip, especially in the morning.

He’s supposed to run a mile, or do other running. I can’t run with him because my knees won’t take it. So I ride alongside on my bike, which really isn’t much of a workout. Running also means that I have to lug around all this weight above the belt. And that’s rough.

Jeez, how are your knees holding up?

But this got me curious. Is this the whole workout routine? I’m looking to change up my workouts.

I think the list there is still a bit baffling. What the fuck is a truck jump, and how do you do 20 of them with all the other stuff? And doing plyometric and core in the same workout.

He'd better be a seriously good goalie, lol.

That isn’t so bad. It is when you start doing wind sprints is when the fun factor drops to zero and the suck factor rises.

But if you can do it, you’ll be a monster.

Huge majority of people in the gym don’t pay for the trainer - they get the introductory “this is how you use this machine” when they sign the contract and that’s about it. CrossFit gyms do correct your technique constantly, so those might work for people which need someone to tell them what to do.

You are correct on the youtube part :)

I tried to do it on my own when I joined my gym, and then I started doing group exercise classes which has helped tremendously.

Fellow Old Man, I'd highly recommend looking into forefoot/midfoot striking (barefoot style). I used to have shin splints and knee problems and thought I'd never run more than a mile again. After switching styles and learning the new way, I was back to personal records in the mile and 5k within 6 months. I run (and lift) exclusively in Vibram Fivefingers or New Balance Minimus now.

Tuck jumps are explosive jumps where you bring your knees to your chest in midair. It’s coordination training, plus it’s a squat-jump and a crunch all in one. Great movement.

Check out YouTube if you are interested in the specific exercises. And, we don’t do all of these on one day. It’s usually arms and legs one day, then plyometrics the other day. And he is a good goalie, and would be even better if he were more dedicated. At 13, he’d rather play video games with his brothers.

In the cooler months, I ride a pretty hard 10 miles 4-5 times a week. I got pretty good at it, but as soon as I tired running I almost died because I wasn’t used to carrying around the weight of my body. And now my knees aren’t up to it. So, no wind sprints for this old man.

Ahh...it isn’t so bad. It is generally short distances or hills. Man, I ran alot of hills in my soccer career. There was a massive hill we used to have to run and it was a moment of accomplishment when we could do it without being winded....but then we went down and did it again.

I goto a spin class usually 2-3 times a week and then go run 1-2 miles. I got fat and lazy during winter in the shithole that is Maryland, so my body is taking a serious beating right now.
